Hair Care Guide
General tips for healthier, stronger hair between salon visits.
Vivid colour fades. But how fast it fades is almost entirely down to aftercare. Here's what Katy recommends to every client leaving the chair.
One of the most common questions after a vivid colour appointment is "how do I make this last?" The honest answer is that no vivid colour lasts forever โ but the difference between fading nicely over 6โ8 weeks and going patchy in two is almost always down to what happens at home.
These are the aftercare rules Katy gives every client at Funky-Doos Hair Salon in Paisley after a vivid or funky colour appointment.
Heat and water are the two biggest enemies of vivid colour. Every time you wash your hair, some pigment leaves with it โ that's just chemistry. So the fewer washes, the better your colour holds.
The final rinse matters most. Even if you wash warm, rinse with the coldest water you can stand at the end. It seals the cuticle and keeps colour in longer.
Standard shampoos often contain sulphates, which are great at stripping oil but terrible for colour. A sulphate-free or colour-safe formula will clean your hair without dragging the pigment out with it.
For vivid shades specifically, look for shampoos designed for colour-treated hair. Joico Color Balance and K-PAK Reconstruct are two that Katy recommends regularly to clients at Funky-Doos.
Vivid colour needs healthy hair to cling to. Porous or damaged hair loses pigment faster because there's less structure holding it in place. Regular conditioning โ and a proper deep conditioning treatment once a week โ improves the hair's ability to hold colour.
Direct heat opens the cuticle and fades colour fast. If you use straighteners, curlers or a diffuser regularly, a quality heat protectant is non-negotiable.
Cheap heat protectants often don't protect above 180ยฐC. If you're using high-heat tools, check the product actually covers the temperature you're using. Joico's Defy Damage Protective Shield is one Katy recommends for this.
Sun exposure fades vivid colour quickly โ especially pinks, purples and reds. Chlorine in swimming pools is even more damaging and can cause unexpected colour shifts, particularly on bleached hair.
Colour-depositing conditioners are a great way to top up fading vivid shades between salon visits. You apply them like a regular conditioner and they deposit a small amount of colour pigment each time, keeping the tone looking fresher for longer.
Ask Katy at your appointment which shade would work best as a toning conditioner for your specific colour โ it varies depending on the shade and your natural base.
With good aftercare, most vivid colours look their best for 4โ6 weeks and fade gracefully for another 2โ4 after that. Some shades โ particularly greens and blues โ last longer. Pinks and reds tend to fade fastest. Always ask Katy at your appointment what to expect for your specific shade.
The right time to rebook depends on your colour and how it's fading. Some clients are happy to let it fade out naturally and then go fresh. Others prefer to stay on top of it with regular toning or refresh appointments.
If you're unsure, message Katy on Instagram or Facebook with a photo of where your colour is at and she'll let you know what she'd recommend.
