Vivid Colour Aftercare
How to make funky and bold colour last as long as possible.
Not all hair products are created equal โ especially when your hair is bleached, coloured or in the middle of a correction. Here's why Joico earns its place in Katy's recommendations.
When clients ask what products to use at home, Katy's answer tends to come back to Joico more often than not. Not because it's the only good brand out there โ there are several โ but because it consistently delivers results for the types of hair she works with most at Funky-Doos Hair Salon in Paisley.
Here's an honest look at what the brand does well and which products Katy tends to recommend most.
Joico was built around colour-treated hair from the start. A lot of brands have a colour-care range as an afterthought โ Joico's entire formulation philosophy centres on protecting and extending colour. For Katy's clients, many of whom are getting vivid colour, highlights, colour correction or bleach work done, that matters.
The brand uses what they call a SmartRelease technology in many of their products โ a bio-advanced formula that delivers keratin, rosehip oil and arginine to the hair continuously. It sounds like marketing language, but the practical result is noticeably stronger, smoother hair with continued use.
Salon-recommended products aren't always massively better than drugstore alternatives โ but for bleached or heavily coloured hair, the difference is more noticeable. Joico is worth the price if your hair takes a lot of chemical work.
The go-to for blonde and highlighted clients. The purple pigment neutralises brassy, yellow tones and keeps blonde looking cooler and cleaner between appointments. Katy recommends using it once or twice a week rather than every wash โ overuse can deposit too much purple pigment, especially on very light hair.
K-PAK is designed specifically for damaged, over-processed or chemically treated hair. It rebuilds the hair's internal structure using a blend of proteins and amino acids. For clients who've had a lot of bleach work, box dye correction or repeated chemical services, this is one of the most effective repair-focused ranges Katy has used.
Specifically formulated for vivid and fashion shades, this range is sulphate-free and designed to protect bold pigments from fading. It's gentler than standard shampoo and helps funky colour hold its tone for longer between appointments โ particularly useful for pinks, purples, blues and greens.
One of the better heat protectants in Katy's view โ it protects up to 230ยฐC, which actually covers the temperatures most people are using. It also bonds hair and helps prevent colour fade with heat, which most basic heat protectants don't address. Worth using any time you're putting hot tools near coloured or bleached hair.
A deep conditioning treatment for seriously damaged or very dry hair. Applied once a week, left on for 5โ10 minutes, it makes a noticeable difference to hair that feels rough, fragile or porous. Katy often recommends this to clients whose hair needs a few weeks of prep before a big colour appointment.
The main difference between salon-grade products and supermarket ones isn't always ingredients โ it's concentration. Salon products are often more concentrated, which means you need less. Using the same amount as you would with a drugstore product is one of the reasons people sometimes feel like professional products aren't worth the cost.
Katy is happy to recommend specific products based on your hair type, colour and what you're trying to achieve. If you're unsure what you should be using at home, just ask โ it's part of the consultation and there's no obligation to buy anything.
